Guiding Youth Forward

Every day, The Next Door’s dedicated Youth Outreach Workers (YOWs) empower students to build brighter futures. Students in local Gorge schools receive the mentorship and encouragement needed to succeed by working with YOWs in our Columbia Gorge Youth Connection (CGYC) program. One student’s story is a powerful reminder that the right support can be life-changing.

For the past year, Emma has juggled high school and work while living with her friend. Without a home of her own, she’s faced personal hardships no teenager should have to endure, and the stress, uncertainty, and constant pressure to succeed have only added to the weight Emma’s had to carry. Yet, despite all of the obstacles in her path, she has been determined to overcome them.

Emma began meeting regularly with a YOW at The Dalles High School who helped her access the necessary resources to thrive. Through CGYC, she was connected to housing and food resources, community-based mentoring, in-school guidance, and mental health care with a therapist from The Next Door’s Counseling Services program. With this support system in place, Emma was able to focus on her studies and personal growth, building the confidence and stability she needed to move forward each day.

Early this spring, Emma learned that her perseverance was paying off; not only is she on track to graduate high school, but she will be graduating an entire year early. Her resilience turned what once seemed impossible into her new reality, proving that the right support can open doors to new possibilities. Now Emma is focused on her next chapter as she researches colleges, applies for scholarships, and plans for life after high school.

Emma is just one of many students who rely on the guidance and access to community resources provided by CGYC’s Youth Outreach Workers. To meet the growing needs of youth in our community, the program has expanded its reach to include 12 local area schools in Hood River, White Salmon, Trout Lake, The Dalles and Wishram, and is expected to add 2 more YOWs in Goldendale and Stevenson schools by the end of 2025.

Your support allows us to continue providing this essential service as we work toward our vision of creating a supportive community where all children and families are safe, healthy, and valued. Visit nextdoorinc.org/donate to double your impact today!
